A young woman accused of fatally attacking an Indian student she met on a dating app has had her charges upgraded to murder.

Jamie Lee Dolheguy, 18, sat impassively with her head slightly down as she appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, via a video link from custody.

Ms Dolheguy was arrested last week over an alleged attack on Maulin Rathod at her home in Sunbury last Monday, which left the 25-year-old with fatal injuries. He died in hospital the following  day. Ms Dolheguy and Mr Rathod reportedly met online and arranged to meet each other.

She was charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury after her arrest, and also faced a charge of murder by the time she fronted court.

The other three charges still stand, but could be struck out before her next court appearance.

The teenager, who wore a blue top and had her hair short and neat, did not say anything during her short court appearance.

She was remanded in custody to appear again on November 19.
